How to Answer "Where Do You See Yourself in 5 Years?"
The interviewer is testing two things: ambition (are you driven?) and retention (will you stick around?). The trick is showing growth within their company without sounding unrealistic.
The Strategy
Don't describe a specific title ("I want to be VP of Marketing"). Instead, describe skills you want to develop and impact you want to have. This is more flexible and harder to find fault with.
Template
"In five years, I want to be someone who's [deepened expertise / taken on leadership / made measurable impact] in [field/area]. Specifically, I'd love to be leading [type of work] and mentoring others. What excites me about this role is that it's a clear step in that direction — especially [specific aspect of the role that aligns with growth]."Example — Individual Contributor Track
"In five years, I see myself as a senior expert in [field] — the person the team goes to for [specific skill]. I'd love to be mentoring junior team members and shaping strategy. This role excites me because it lets me go deeper into [specific area], which is exactly the direction I want to grow."Example — Management Track
"In five years, I see myself leading a team — taking the operational skills I'm building now and applying them at a strategic level. I'm interested in [specific area of leadership], and I know that starts with being excellent at the individual level first, which is why this role is a great fit."What to Avoid
- "I want to start my own business" (flight risk)
- "I'm not sure" (no ambition)
- Naming a title that doesn't exist at their company
- "I want your job" (too aggressive)
