How to Answer "Why Do You Want to Work Here?"
This question separates candidates who did their research from those who didn't. The interviewer wants to know you chose their company specifically — not just "any company hiring."
The 3-Part Formula
Structure
1. Something specific about the company (product, mission, recent news, culture)2. How it connects to your skills/values
3. What you're excited to contribute
Example
"I've been following [company]'s work in [specific area] since [specific event/product]. What stands out to me is [specific observation — not from their homepage]. My background in [your skill] aligns well with that direction — at my last role I [relevant achievement]. I'm excited to bring that experience here and help [specific goal you'd contribute to]."Red Flags
- "You have great benefits" or "I need a job" — shows zero genuine interest
- Generic answers that apply to any company ("you're innovative")
- Reciting their "About Us" page verbatim
The key is specificity. Reference a recent product launch, a specific challenge they face, or something you learned from talking to an employee. That proves you chose them, not just applied everywhere.
