Virtual Interview Tips (That Actually Matter)
Virtual interviews have different rules than in-person ones. Here is what actually matters.
Tech Setup (Do This the Day Before)
- Test your camera, mic, and lighting. Sit facing a window or use a ring light.
- Close all unnecessary apps. Notifications during an interview look unprofessional.
- Use a wired connection if possible. Wi-Fi drops happen. A cable prevents them.
- Test with a friend. Do a 2-minute call to check audio and video quality.
- Have a backup. Phone hotspot + the interview app on your phone, just in case.
Body Language on Camera
- Look at the camera, not the screen. This simulates eye contact.
- Sit up straight. Slouching reads as low energy on camera.
- Use hand gestures within the frame. They show energy and engagement.
- Nod and react visibly. On video, subtle reactions disappear. Be slightly more expressive.
The Biggest Virtual Mistakes
- Distracting background. Use a blurred or clean background. No virtual backgrounds — they glitch.
- Reading from a script. Your eyes moving back and forth is obvious on camera. Use bullet-point notes instead.
- Interruptions. Tell housemates/kids. Put a sign on your door. Silence your phone.
- Wearing only a nice top. You never know when you will need to stand up. Dress fully.
