How to Write a Cover Letter (That Gets Read)
Most cover letters are skimmed for 6 seconds or skipped entirely. Here is the 4-paragraph structure that makes yours worth reading.
Paragraph 1: The Hook (2 sentences)
Do not start with "I am writing to apply for..." Start with why you are genuinely interested and what makes you uniquely qualified.
Paragraph 2: The Proof (3-4 sentences)
This is the core. Pick ONE achievement that maps directly to the job description top requirement. Quantify it.
Paragraph 3: The Fit (2-3 sentences)
Show you understand their company and why you are a cultural/strategic fit.
Paragraph 4: The Close (2 sentences)
Keep it brief and confident.
Cover Letter Rules
- Maximum: 1 page, 250-350 words
- Address it to a specific person if possible (LinkedIn makes this easy)
- Never repeat your resume — complement it with story and motivation
- Proofread. Twice. A typo in a cover letter is often an automatic rejection.
